Voting is now open for the Australian Bar Awards – with a category dedicated especially to venues under 100 pax (aka Small Bars). So with over 75 new small bars opening around Australia in 2011, it’s going to be a tough call to pick a single fave (especially as there were over 32,000 submissions for the various categories last year!).
It’s worth keeping in mind that whilst a bar’s location, design, food and beverage all play a key role in the success of any venue. One of the primary metrics (some would argue the key metric) for the success of a bar, is its staff. With a venue’s reputation being made or broken on the skill, knowledge, and experience of its team members. Tending bar is often an arduous, and thankless job, which is why events like this, that reward bars and their staff, are integral to the hospitality industry.
2011 saw a few of my favourite craft beer watering holes all take out a finalist awards, all of which (IMO) were well deserved, they included:
Voting is open from March 1 – May 27 (midnight), 2012
Sydney Bar Week (various locations, Sydney): September 22 – 25, 2012
Australian Bar Awards at Doltone House: September, 25, 2012
The finalé of the Australian Bar Awards (September, 25, 2012) will culminate in an event at the Overseas Passenger Terminal and Doltone House. As always, the night will be a lavish affair, with hundreds of industry personalities turning out to support their peers. After the success of last year’s Mad Men theme, 2012 should be a stellar evening, so if you’re interstate make sure you book your time off now!
Regardless of whether you’ll be hitting up the awards night, show your love, and head over to barweek.com.au to cast your vote for your fave small bar (or brew house).
