Hidden away, from the hustle and bustle of George Street, is the small non-descript laneway of De Mestre Place. Venture down the ramp, turn right, and you’ll notice a fire door thats oddly surrounded by astro turf, look closely at the door, and you’ll notice the letter ‘B’ on it – Welcome to the Burrow Bar.
Burrow is the labour of love of four long-time friends (Jonny, Bryce, Chau and Pie), whose hospitality pedigree spans over 20 years, and across several continents. Bryce in particular, has done stints at Low 302, Peppermint lounge, The SG, and the Newtown cocktail scene.
Looking at it now, its hard to believe the long, intimate, dimly lit, small bar – with polished concrete floors, exposed timber ceilings, limestone walls, high bench tables, and luxurious parlour chairs, was once a brightly lit, commercial office space, clad in gyprock, white painted walls and office equipment.
Rather than specialise in one particular style of spirit, the Burrow crew prefer to focus on variety cocktails (ranging from $14-$19) – such as the Burrow Shrub, Gintreaguing, or the One in a Melon (fresh watermelon juice, mint, vodka, and a dash of hibiscus tea). There’s also a compact list of wines by the glass, and refreshing bottled craft beers to whet your whistle.
If you’re feeling a bit peckish, the guys have you covered with some traditional light bar snacks, or something more substantial, such as Chicken Liver Parfait, or the Reuben Double on home baked Rye, with slow cooked 48hr Brisket.
