Despite being tucked away down a small laneway in Surry Hills, Deli Wine Bar is not hard to miss behind its bright red and blue striped door (formerly The Red Door bar).
Head downstairs (via Foveaux St Dining) to a dimly lit, booth lined, limestone basement bar, that offers up some of the best cheese and Charcuterie in Sydney.
Chef/owner Darrell Felstead has aimed to provide a bar that focuses on simple, light comforts, much like a picnic. Offering numerous cheeses – Jannei Bent Back Chevre Goats, Thones Beaufort Hard, Mauri Taleggio Soft and Cropwell Bishop Stilton Blue (from $6), Charcuterie boards with Wild boar salami ($27), freshly shucked Pacific and Sydney Rock oysters ($4 ea), pickles and breads.
There’s decent selection of local and imported wines, including a ‘Sparkling Vouvray’ Chenin Blanc – Loire Valley, Sigurd Grenache Shiraz – Barossa Valley, and Bodegas Valdesil ‘Montenovo’ – Valdeorras, Spain.
A great little touch, is that most of the wines on offer are available by the half glass, glass, carafe or full bottle. This allows you the option of tasting several different varieties during the course of your visit.
On the cocktail side of things, Deli’s Signature cocktails include the Captain’s Blood( rum, lime and angostura bitters), Blood and Sand (scotch sweet vermouth, orange juice and cherry herring) and the Major Bailey (gin, sugar syrup, and mint).
There’s a compact selection of beer & cider including Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, Monteith’s Golden Lager & Summer Ale, Custard & Co Original Cider.
