What’s in a name? Well according to NSW’s Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority – a lot!
While bars with names such as The Bearded Tit, and the Stuffed Beaver are given the green light, for some bizarre reason, NSW craft beer focused small bar Spooning Goats was knocked back. Leaving owner Jason Newton with somewhat of a last minute naming dilemma, to find a new name for his York Street venue. Eventually settling on an abbreviated version (of the full name) with – The SG.
Occupying the old Mojo Music basement on York Street, Spooning Goat’s fit-out is an eclectic mix of retro, pre-loved furniture, polished concrete, 70’s style burnt orange 3D wallpaper, lashings of ‘vintage’ spoon collections, and heavy emphasis on Star Wars paraphernalia. There’s even a couple of arcade machines, and some old skool Atari/Sega consoles for you to relive your (or your parents) childhood.
One of the great things about The SG is its strong focus on NSW craft Beers. There’s 4 x rotating taps, often sporting new, or limited release, beers from NSW craft brewers. With local, new comer Akasha Brewing launching their Freshwater Pale Ale at The SG in April. Draught beer aside, you’ll also find a decent selection of local bottled beers and refreshing ciders hidden away in the fridge.
If beer’s not your thing the friendly bar crew can whip you up a classic cocktail such as an Old Fashioned, Whisky Sour, or something a more adventurous like their Apple Warhead (think Sour Warhead lollies – Gin, Apple Liqueur, Lemon, rimmed with a special sour mix!). They also have a compact selection of Aussie vino’s available from Margaret River, McLaren Vale, the Hunter, and Orange.
If you’re feeling a little peckish, there’s a selection of delicious homemade pies, toasted cheese melts, and nuts & bolts to keep the wolf from the door.
